Thurston's Wave Rider Day is Friday, August 24, 2018 beginning at 8 a.m. for incoming 8th graders. New Student/Parent Orientation begins at 9 a.m. WEB Day is Monday, August 27, 2018. This is a team-building, fun day for all incoming 6th graders and begins at 9 a.m. We look forward to seeing you on these important days!

Summer school 2018 at Laguna Beach Unified School District will begin on Monday, June 25 for all grade levels. Elementary and middle school students will be attending Top of the World Elementary School and students in grades 9-12 will be at Laguna Beach High School.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has designated Laguna Beach Unified School District a No Place for Hate® district, recognizing its commitment to creating safe and respectful learning environments for students. The ADL will present LBUSD with the No Place for Hate designation at the school board meeting in the fall.

Block days are coming to an end on Thursday, June 7 and Friday, June 8. There will be a regular bell schedule, periods 0 - 6, on Thursday, June 14 and then modified schedules for the remaining school days. Final exams and early release at 1 p.m. begin on Monday, June 18 through the last day of school on Thursday, June 21.

Laura Silver, an 8th-grade language arts teacher at Thurston Middle School, was selected as the LBUSD Teacher of the Year. Additionally, Kristine Landrum, special education instructional assistant at Top of the World Elementary, was selected as the Classified Employee of the Year for the district.

Three teams from Laguna Beach Unified School District competing in the Destination Imagination® (DI) Affiliate (state/country) Tournament have advanced to the Global Finals taking place May 23-26 in Knoxville, Tennessee. The annual Global Finals competition is the world's largest celebration of student creativity.

The Center for Digital Education recognized LBUSD as a Digital School Districts Survey 2017-2018 winner for its innovative technology and digital learning initiatives. The survey awards the U.S. public school boards and districts that most fully implement technology benchmarks in the evolution of digital education.

On April 12 at 5:30 p.m. committee members and staff will present a recommendation for the restructuring of the student instructional year in 2019-20 at a Board Study Session to which the public is invited to attend and provide input to the Board. No decisions regarding the calendar will be made at this meeting.

"LBUSD Presents: Julie Lythcott-Haims" will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at 625 Park Avenue in Laguna Beach. 6th Grade Oral History Luncheons are March 26 - 28 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the TMS Gymnasium. On March 27 & 28, all seventh and eighth graders will be heading to their Passion Project Field Trip. If any parents would like to volunteer, please sign up to come chaperone.

Six teams, of 4 to 7 students each, representing Laguna Beach High School, Thurston Middle School, and Top of the World Elementary from Laguna Beach Unified School District have qualified to move on to the Destination Imagination (DI) state competition on April 7 in Clovis. Teams will compete in various categories.

Thurston Wheel Days are cancelled for Thursday, March 22 and Friday, March 23. Wheel Days will be rescheduled. March 22 and 23 are also minimum days and students will be released at 1 p.m. No late buses.

Irene White, director of special education for the Laguna Beach Unified School District, was named 2018 Special Education Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators Region 17. ACSA Region 17 will recognize all award recipients at the Orange County Administrators of the Year Banquet on May 7 in Irvine.

On December 12, the Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education took action to approve the Positive Certification of the 2017-2018 First Interim Financial Report and authorized its filing with the County Superintendent of Schools. The report highlights various positive adjustments to the adopted budget for the year.
