LBHS Drama presents Living With Mental Illness, a playwriting & directing showcase. The original student works illustrate the realities of mental illness with the goal of reducing stigma through the art of theatre. Summer school 2018 at Laguna Beach Unified School District will begin on Monday, June 25 for all grade levels. Elementary and middle school students will be attending Top of the World Elementary School and students in grades 9-12 will be at Laguna Beach High School.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has designated Laguna Beach Unified School District a No Place for Hate® district, recognizing its commitment to creating safe and respectful learning environments for students. The ADL will present LBUSD with the No Place for Hate designation at the school board meeting in the fall.

Laguna Beach High School seniors, Charlotte Hoffs, Benjamin Sharp, and Joseph Ravenna, were selected as winners of a National Merit® $2500 Scholarship. The scholarship is underwritten by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) with its funds; it is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships.

Laura Silver, an 8th-grade language arts teacher at Thurston Middle School, was selected as the LBUSD Teacher of the Year. Additionally, Kristine Landrum, special education instructional assistant at Top of the World Elementary, was selected as the Classified Employee of the Year for the district.

Three teams from Laguna Beach Unified School District competing in the Destination Imagination® (DI) Affiliate (state/country) Tournament have advanced to the Global Finals taking place May 23-26 in Knoxville, Tennessee. The annual Global Finals competition is the world's largest celebration of student creativity.

The Center for Digital Education recognized LBUSD as a Digital School Districts Survey 2017-2018 winner for its innovative technology and digital learning initiatives. The survey awards the U.S. public school boards and districts that most fully implement technology benchmarks in the evolution of digital education.

On April 12 at 5:30 p.m. committee members and staff will present a recommendation for the restructuring of the student instructional year in 2019-20 at a Board Study Session to which the public is invited to attend and provide input to the Board. On March 24, LBHS Model United Nations students held the first annual Laguna Beach Multicultural Festival in the LBHS quad. Over 300 MUN students from all over Southern California were in attendance. A dozen cultures were represented from the LBHS community.

Six teams, of 4 to 7 students each, representing Laguna Beach High School, Thurston Middle School, and Top of the World Elementary from Laguna Beach Unified School District have qualified to move on to the Destination Imagination (DI) state competition on April 7 in Clovis. Laguna Beach High School is among seven Orange County schools recognized by the California Courts system for its efforts to engage students in civic learning. An Award of Merit was presented to LBHS for its civic learning practices in Advanced Placement (AP) European History and its Model United Nations (MUN) program.

Irene White, director of special education for the Laguna Beach Unified School District, was named 2018 Special Education Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators Region 17.
