Laguna Beach High School students Kenneth Chu and Kyle Herkins have been named Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. These talented seniors will have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million next spring.

Laguna Beach Unified School District has named Brandon Lee, instructional assistant at El Morro Elementary School, the recipient of the 2019 Spirit of Laguna award. Lee currently serves as a lead instructional assistant at El Morro and forms a part of the Crisis Prevention Intervention team at the site.

At the August 27 board meeting, the Laguna Beach Unified School District Board of Education voted 5-0 to appoint Top of the World Elementary School Principal Michael Conlon as the director of human resources. The new position was approved on July 16, 2019, as part of administrative restructuring at the district level.

Auditions for the LBHS Fall Play, Our Town by Thornton Wilder, will be held on Tuesday, August 27 from 6:00-9:00pm in the Greene Room, LBHS 55. Auditions are open to all LBHS students, you do not need to be enrolled in another theatre course in order to audition. This is a large cast production with many roles available!

Laguna Beach Unified School District has been ranked #1 in Best School Districts in Orange County by data compiler Niche, which looked at school districts across the country leading into the 2019-2020 school year. Niche looked at data from the U.S. Department of Ed as well as test scores, college data, and ratings collected from Niche users.

Laguna Beach High School is seeking mentors to participate in Authentic Exploratory Research (AER), a student self-directed project-based learning program set to launch in the fall. Focused on real-world application, AER asks students to identify a field of interest and pairs each student with a volunteer mentor in that field.

Laguna Beach High School (LBHS) and Top of the World Elementary (TOW) have been named to the 2018-2019 Educational Results Partnership Honor Roll for high achievement and student success. Steve Sogo, a science teacher at Laguna Beach High School, was selected as the Laguna Beach Unified School District's Teacher of the Year. Additionally, Nikki Romano, library media specialist at Top of the World Elementary (TOW), was selected as the Classified Employee of the Year for the district.

LBUSD was awarded four grants totaling $18,000 from the Festival of Arts (FOA) Foundation to enhance fine arts programs at LBHS and Thurston Middle School. The Laguna Beach FOA Foundation was incorporated in 1989 to preserve and promote the fine arts and all other artistic endeavors in and about Laguna Beach.

Laguna Beach High School is among seventeen Orange County schools recognized by the California Courts system for its efforts to engage students in civic learning. An Award of Merit was presented to LBHS for its civic learning practices in Advanced Placement (AP) European History and its Model United Nations (MUN) program.

LBUSD is one of 373 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 9th Annual AP® District Honor Roll. Since 2016, LBUSD has increased the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher.
