Grading Procedures

As per Board Policy No. 6012, progress report cards and semester grades will be recorded and made available through the Aeries student/parent portal.

High school courses are typically awarded five credits in each course per semester. Semester grades and credit are placed onto a student’s transcript. High school semester grade points will be calculated for courses on the following numerical value. Total points by total credits taken determine the grade point average (GPA).  Each traditional academic year has two semesters, Fall and Spring.

Letter grades are issued as follows: There is no +/- point difference on the LBHS Transcript.

Mark Definition Standard Weight Advanced Placement Weight
A Very High Achievement 4 5
B High Achievement 3 4
C Moderate Achievement 2 3
D Low Achievement 1 1
F Failure 0 0
W Withdraw without penalty
WF Withdrawal with failing grade, counts as an F in GPA calculation 0 0

Honors courses are calculated differently by the University of California.  Courses with the name of honors, hon or pre-AP may not have an additional point value.  Extra weighting with a specific point value differs as on a school-by-school basis.  Schools may have a .5 or 1 point allowance in addition to a difference to a +/- value.   Students who transfer into Laguna Beach high school with honors credits on their transcript are subject to specific transfer policies in interpreting coursework and grade transfer.  Students can submit their previous high school transcripts to the Universities for evaluation as a separate transcript.  Most Colleges will recalculate the high school GPA using their own rubric.

Approved courses outside of LBHS may be listed as an out-of-district course on the student's transcript.  Grades will be posted as listed on the school's official transcript, however the point value will be aligned with LBHS grading scale. College courses are not allocated additional points as per the terms of the contact that is signed.
