Private/Out-of-State/International
Your college options extend far beyond California. Whether you're interested in a private college, attending a public university in another state, or earning your degree abroad, there are thousands of schools to explore. Each type of institution has its own application process, deadlines, and admission requirements.
Use the tabs below to learn about the Common Application, Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE), Coalition Application, and International Universities, and find the pathway that's right for you.
Common Application
Many private colleges and universities, as well as public universities outside of California, use the Common Application (Common App). This online application allows students to apply to hundreds of colleges by completing one application that can be sent to multiple schools, making the college application process simpler and more efficient.
Action Steps
1. Create Your Common App Account
Add the colleges you're interested in applying to.
2. Complete Your Application
Fill out your personal information, academic history, activities, honors, and other required sections.
Complete the Common App Essay and any college-specific supplemental essays.
3. Submit Your Applications
Review each college's application requirements and deadlines.
Submit your applications before each school's deadline.
Important Reminders
One application platform: Use the Common App to apply to nearly 900 colleges and universities in all 50 states and around the world.
After submitting your application, monitor your application portal and email for additional requests or updates.
Each college sets its own application deadlines, fees, essay requirements, and admission policies.
Many schools require:
- Letters of recommendation
- Official transcripts
- School counselor forms
- Supplemental essays
Some colleges are test-optional, while others may require or recommend SAT/ACT scores.
Always check each college's admissions website for current requirements.

Helpful Tip 💡
Even though the Common App makes it easy to apply to multiple colleges, every school has unique requirements. Be sure to review each college's admissions website carefully before submitting your application.
Western Undergraduate Exchange - WUE
The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) is a tuition savings program that allows students from participating western states to attend eligible out-of-state public colleges and universities at a significantly reduced tuition rate. Instead of paying full nonresident tuition, eligible students may pay no more than 150% of the institution's resident tuition, potentially saving thousands of dollars each year.

Action Steps
1. Explore Participating Colleges
Visit the WUE website to search for participating colleges and universities.
Review each school's WUE eligibility requirements, participating majors, and tuition savings.
2. Apply for Admission
Submit your application through the college's required application platform (Common App, institutional application, or another application system).
Indicate your interest in the WUE program if required.
3. Confirm Your WUE Eligibility
Check your admissions portal or contact the college's admissions office to verify your WUE award and any next steps.
Important Reminders
Each participating institution sets its own:
- Eligibility requirements
- GPA or academic standards
- Participating majors
- Number of WUE awards available
WUE awards are not guaranteed, even if you meet the minimum requirements.
Some campuses have limited spaces or competitive selection for WUE students.
Apply early whenever possible, as some schools have priority deadlines for WUE consideration.

Helpful Tip 💡
If you're interested in attending a public university outside of California, check whether it participates in WUE before applying. The tuition savings can make an out-of-state education much more affordable.
International Universities
Is Studying Abroad Right for You?
Earning your degree abroad can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it's important to understand how international universities differ from U.S. colleges.
Many international universities expect students to apply directly to a specific course of study (major) rather than enter as undecided. Academic programs often focus more deeply on your chosen field with fewer general education requirements.
Campus life can also look different. Instead of fraternities, sororities, and large varsity sports programs, many universities offer vibrant student unions, clubs, organizations, and competitive club sports. If you're excited about experiencing a new culture, gaining a global perspective, and diving into your academic interests from day one, studying internationally may be a great fit.
Action Steps
1. Research Countries & Universities
Explore universities that match your academic and career goals.
Learn about each country's education system, admission requirements, and application process.
2. Review Admission Requirements
International universities may require: Academic transcripts, Personal statement or essays, Letters of recommendation, English language proficiency (if applicable), Additional country- or program-specific requirements
3. Apply & Plan Ahead
Pay close attention to application deadlines, which often differ from U.S. colleges.
Research visas, housing, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities early in the process.
Important Reminders
- Many international universities require you to choose your major before applying.
- Application requirements and deadlines vary by country and university.
- Tuition costs can be significantly lower than many U.S. colleges, but be sure to factor in housing, travel, health insurance, and visa expenses.
- International degrees are widely respected, but students should research licensing or certification requirements if planning to return to the U.S. for certain careers (such as teaching, nursing, or law).
- Start researching early to allow plenty of time for applications, visas, and travel planning.
